Gomez latest Red to come down with serious injury

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has had surgery on a knee injury and is "likely" to miss a "significant part" of the rest of season, the club says.

Gomez was injured on Wednesday while training with England before Thursday's friendly with the Republic of Ireland.

The 23-year-old's club said he had undergone "successful" surgery to repair a tendon in his left knee.

The Reds are already without fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk because of a long-term knee ligament injury.

"The issue was isolated to Gomez's tendon, with no damage to any other associated knee ligaments," Liverpool said.

Joe Gomez returns to training after three-months out

Liverpool and England defender Joe Gomez has returned to training following more than three months out of action after breaking his leg.
Gomez, 21, fractured his lower leg during the Premier League game at Burnley on 5 December.
"It is nice - Joe is not injured any more and nearly fit," said Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.
"Joe was out for 15 weeks. That's long, so he needs to now create the basis again for the rest of the season."

Gomez out for six weeks, Dyche defends brutal Burnley tactics

Joe Gomez could be out for six weeks after Liverpool confirmed he suffered a lower leg fracture in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory at Burnley. The England defender was carried off on a stretcher in the first half at Turf Moor after a challenge with Ben Mee.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday. Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though this is dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.”

Joe Gomez on Reds' solid defensive start

Joe Gomez reflected on Liverpool's best ever start to a season defensively and insisted: “It's been a real team effort.”
The Reds have conceded just three goals in nine Premier League matches after keeping a sixth clean sheet in Saturday's 1-0 win at Huddersfield Town.
It marks Liverpool out - alongside Manchester City - as the Premier League's most miserly defence, with the two teams shipping four less than Chelsea and Spurs' seven.
Gomez excelled once again alongside Virgil van Dijk, Dejan Lovren and Andy Robertson as goalkeeper Alisson Becker was rarely tested.
A year ago the 21-year-old was part of the Liverpool side thrashed 4-1 by Tottenham at Wembley. The transformation overseen by Jurgen Klopp since then has been vast.
