Sturridge and Moreno to leave Reds

Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno will leave Liverpool this summer at the end of their contracts.

England striker Sturridge, 29, scored 67 goals in 160 appearances after joining from Chelsea in January 2013.

Spanish left-back Moreno played 141 times for the club, having signed from Sevilla in August 2014.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "The most important words to say to these two remarkable players are 'thank you'."

The Reds are keen to offer Klopp a new contract after winning the Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in Madrid on Saturday.

Sturridge: past defeats spurred Reds on to Champions League glory

Daniel Sturridge has described how the “heartache” of past European final defeats proved an invaluable lesson for Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in Madrid.

The Liverpool striker, who will leave as a free agent this summer, has witnessed several cup final defeats and Premier League title near-misses during six and a half years at Anfield. He admits the experiences have left a lasting pain but also helped Liverpool to prepare for Saturday’s final and maintain composure when put under pressure by Tottenham.

The 2016 Europa League final, when Liverpool led Sevilla 1-0 at half-time thanks to Sturridge but lost 3-1, was mentioned during the interval on Saturday before Jürgen Klopp secured the first trophy of his Anfield reign.

Sturridge faces FA betting charges

Daniel Sturridge has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the Football Association betting rules in January, although the Liverpool striker insists that he has “never gambled on football”.

Even if this is found to be true a guilty verdict could still be returned due to the rules Sturridge is alleged to have contravened being wider than directly betting on the sport.

A Liverpool spokesperson said: “Daniel has given his full and unequivocal cooperation throughout this process and has assured the club he will continue to do so. Daniel has also stated categorically that he has never gambled on football.As with any issue of this nature, we will allow the process to be concluded in its entirety before making any further comment.”

Daniel Sturridge: a new chapter starts

Two days before he becomes a front-runner for Goal of the Season, Daniel Sturridge speaks with what, in hindsight, feels like an eerie, knowing sense of the future.

“Whatever decisions the manager makes, he’s the boss,” says Liverpool’s No.15. “Whatever team he picks, you just give your best whether you come on for five minutes or start the game. It’s just about giving everything on the pitch whenever you get the minutes.”

It is probably more telling, however, to calculate Sturridge’s impact on Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League in seconds.

Only 152 of them had elapsed after his introduction as a substitute at Stamford Bridge – and barely 90 remained in normal time for the Reds to rescue a point against his former club – when the 29-year-old struck.

Van Dijk praises 'world class' Sturridge

Daniel Sturridge’s breath-taking equaliser against Chelsea came as no surprise to Virgil van Dijk.

The striker scored for the 50th time in the Premier League for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday - and he could hardly have chosen a better way to do so, either in terms of timing or style.

With the Reds a goal down in the 89th minute and on the brink of surrendering their unbeaten start to the top-flight campaign, Sturridge sent a precise, curling shot dipping into Kepa Arrizabalaga’s top corner from 25 yards.

Speaking post-match, Jürgen Klopp praised the England international’s impact this season, with that late intervention at Chelsea representing his fourth goal in seven appearances so far in 2018-19.

And the manager’s comments were echoed by Van Dijk, who labelled Sturridge a ‘world-class’ talent.

Incredible Sturridge strike rescues point for Reds

There were two minutes of normal time remaining when Daniel Sturridge – so new to the game there could not have been a scuff of grass on his kit – let fly with an elegant swish of his left boot. Liverpool had given everything to conjure up an equaliser and Sturridge struck just as it had started to seem futile. His goal was a beauty and the body language of Jürgen Klopp’s players at the final whistle made it clear they could live with giving up their immaculate run in the Premier League.

Nobody could argue, either, that it was undeserved, bearing in mind the number of chances Liverpool passed up before Sturridge deceived Kepa Arrizabalaga, the Chelsea goalkeeper, with the swerve and trajectory of his high, angled shot.

Mohamed Salah, one of the repeat offenders, had already left the game by that point, substituted on an evening when he missed more chances than he will probably wish to remember. His replacement, Xherdan Shaqiri, proceeded to squander his side’s most inviting chance and, at that stage, it seemed as though the only consolation for Liverpool could be that it was another six months before they were due to face Eden Hazard again.

Sturridge takes his chance to shine against PSG

If Liverpool are going to challenge on multiple fronts this season then Daniel Sturridge is going to play a big part for them - and he showed why in their Champions League win against Paris St-Germain.

You could argue that Sturridge might have had more than one goal with the chances he had, but the reason he got those opportunities was because of his awareness in the box and his movement into the right areas.

Yes, he might not give you the work-rate off the ball that you get from Roberto Firmino, who is incredibly clever with the way he presses the opposition.

But Sturridge brings something different to the team in that he is a natural talent on the ball as well. When he gets possession, you expect things to happen - and he did not disappoint against the French champions.
